
I have suffered with mental health issues since I was 18, diagnosed with depression, anxiety and BPD, it has taken me a while to overcome my problems and control them. I didn’t speak up about it enough and when I did, unfortunately at the time I had a couple of friends that were not supportive and were in fact ignorant and unkind about my problems.
Thankfully now I am in a much better place and I am surrounded by positive people who have at some point also suffered similar issues. I believe the stigma around mental health is slowly being broken but we still have a long way to go.
1 in 4 people experience a mental health illness each year but there still isn’t enough awareness or funding for mental health especially for young people. The infographic below is from MQ Mental Health Charity highlights some of the concerns surrounding mental health, in particular, the funding restrictions that are affecting services. Young people today aren’t receiving the support they need but there is so much you can do to help by heading over to the ‘get involved’ section of the MQ Mental Health Charity website. MQ Mental Health, leading the way in mental health research to ensure that everyone receives the treatment they need.
